New Grant Allows JFCS to Expand Career Services

JFCS announces today that it is the recipient of Department of Labor Funding through a collaborative grant submitted by the International Association of Jewish Vocational Services (IAJVS) (see information about IAJVS below). IAJVS will receive nearly $2.9 million over a two-year period and was one of three recipients in the country to receive this funding. JFCS is one of nine affiliates of IAJVS that will participate in this groundbreaking program to elevate web support to highlight career and employment opportunities in the healthcare field. The grant will help the grantees ensure that:

•   appropriate computer technology equipment is available:

•   adequate capacity and speed of Internet connections at all affiliate locations is established:

•   all partners are equipped with necessary software tools for pre-training and training activities, including computer literacy, career exploration and career development; and

•   training will be implemented for career coaches, and staffing resources at the local level will be provided.

JFCS, using a train the trainer model, will be working with KentuckianaWorks and the One Stop Career Centers, various educational institutions, such as JCTC and JCPS, and specific employers who hire healthcare personnel. "This grant is a wonderful opportunity for us to train people who utilize web-based career and occupational exploration instruments, while at the same time providing high touch services to ensure success for the job seekers," says Judy Freundlich Tiell, Executive Director of JFCS. "We look forward to working with our partners locally and nationally to better inform and train job seekers and focus attention on healthcare needs."

The first step of the grant will be building capacity for more computer and on-line availability for job seekers and then creating a national protocol for teaching job seekers how to access on-line resources and utilize them to chart their own career preparation and advancement. This is a two year project.

IAJVS is a nonprofit network of 28 national and international human service agencies in major metropolitan areas in the United States, Canada, and Israel. Member agencies provide a vast array of services that have a direct effect on the lives of hundreds of thousands of people each year: career management, skills training, rehabilitation programs, health services, and home and community-based services. http://www.iajvs.org

House Votes to Extend IRA Charitable Rollover Provisions

December 10, 2009

WASHINGTON – Legislation approved by the U.S. House of Representatives today would ensure individuals could continue to make charitable contributions from their retirement accounts tax-free through the end of 2010, says a leading philanthropic organization.

Specifically, the House approved legislation that would allow individuals 70 ½ and older to transfer tax-free up to $100,000 per year from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to a qualified charity.

The Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), which is one of the nation’s largest philanthropic networks, hailed the House vote.  JFNA is an active leader in a coalition that has actively promoted the creation of an IRA Charitable Rollover for the past decade.

“As our nation continues to lift itself out of a recession, we are pleased that the House has endorsed the IRA Charitable Rollover incentive so that donors can continue to help charities provide food, shelter, healthcare and other relief programs for the nation’s most vulnerable,” said William C. Daroff, vice president for public policy and director of The Jewish Federations of North America’s Washington office.  “The IRA rollover is a powerful incentive and an effective fundraising tool for charities that provides needed resources that can be passed on to those who need it the most.  We encourage the Senate to take up this legislation as soon as possible so that the IRA Charitable Rollover can remain in place.”

Batter Up at the JFCS Pancake Breakfast

August 13, 2009

Pancakes were flipping and flying out the kitchen door on Sunday morning, August 9, at the Applebee’s on Ormsby Station at the Flapjack Fundraiser sponsored by Jewish Family & Career Services.  The all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast brought out more than 300 hungry people to support the JFCS Sonny and Janet Meyer Family Food Pantry Fund.

“In the past several months, the JFCS Food Pantry has seen a 25% increase in the number of families coming to the agency seeking food and emergency help during these hard economic times,” commented Shelley Kahn, JFCS volunteer coordinator.  More than 80,000 pounds of food is distributed annually, and the food pantry is now affiliated with Dare to Care.

To the delight of the children attending, the U of L Cardinal Bird showed-up with U of L women’s and men’s basketball players Devon Newman, Becky Burke, Clarence Hollaway and Shabaka Lands as special guests.  With only one griddle and cook, the pancakes were a little slow in coming out from the kitchen, but the all-volunteer committee became instant experts in serving large crowds and making everyone feel welcome.

Janet Meyer was the idea person behind the event and recruited a big committee to help:  Sonny Meyer, Judy Sharp, Carole Snyder, Sara Yamin,  Tami Penner, Ruth Silon, Jane Shapiro, Rhonda Welenken, Howie Evans, Marti Tabereaux, Lowell Katz, Marshall Kahn,Sandi and Barry Friedson, Dara Cohen, Michael Cohen, Bonnie and Harold Cohen,Eileen, Harry and Emily Renco, Linda Goodman, Nancy Blodgett, Alana Cohen, Bonnie Bizer, Bill, Amy, Rachel and Haley Ryan, Marcia and Donald Gordon, Judy Borinstein, Lois Marcus, Louise Miller, Helene Banks, Judy Lauderback, and Pledge 13 members Jennifer and Rebecca Davis.

“We raised more than $2,700 for the food pantry fund,” exclaimed Janet Meyer.  “The committee really pitched in to make this a very successful event.”

Generous Gift from UBS benefits JFCS

May 15, 2009

When the Louisville branch of UBS Financial Services remodeled its offices in May 2009, the corporate officers decided to donate excess furniture and fixtures. Account Manager Mark Switow contacted Stephanie Reese, CFO of Jewish Family & Career Services, to see if the agency was interested. OH YES was the quick answer!

Our public waiting areas look much more professional with 20 conference chairs; several offices received three credenzas, two desk chairs and framed artwork. We also will put to good use a television and VCR. JFCS sincerely thanks UBS for this very generous donation that will provide comfort to our clients and quality office fixtures for our staff.
